83-year-old Ukrainian who gave all his savings — almost $13,000 — to the army received the Order of Merit from the President of Ukraine

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy awarded Mykola Shevchuk, an 83-years-old pensioner from Chernivtsi region, with the Order of Merit (3rd class).

When the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine started, Mykola Shevchuk gave all his savings to the army — 100,000 hryvnias ($2,700) and $10,000. He collected this money for ten years. According to the report of the Ukrainian President’s Office, the award was given for civic courage and self-sacrifice, demonstrated during the defense of state sovereignty and territorial integrity, and loyalty to the Ukrainian people.
