84-year-old man drove an old car for several days to save his family from bombings

An old man on the photo is Valentyn Mykolaiovych, a grandfather lulling his granddaughter 6-month-old Isabella.

For almost a month, his family was hiding from bombings in the basement of a house in the village of Stepove, Zaporizhzhia region. Once after they almost lost the children’s mother Maria and ate all the supplies, the grandfather, the only driver in the family, took his son, daughter-in-law, three grandchildren and a dog in a car to escape to Western Ukraine. That was the first time in his life when Valentyn Mykolaiovych drove such a long distance.

Valentyn’s childhood was spent in the ruins of World War II. “I played with ammunition as a child, but I don’t want my grandchildren to have the same childhood,” he said. The family is finally safe, but they don’t know if they will ever be able to return home.
