93-year-old Ukrainian makes trench candles for soldiers on the front lines

93-year-old Olena Vladymyrets and her daughter make trench candles for soldiers on the front lines. Women manage to make more than 50 candles every day, Suspilne reports.

“A candle burns for up to 12 hours if it is well filled. A liter of water boils in 24 minutes on such a candle. The defenders warm their hands and dry their clothes,” Nina Vladymyrets, Olena’s daughter, told Suspilne.

93-year-old Olena survived Second World War  and Holodomor. Though she cannot walk, she tries to help in any way she can.

“Soldiers use candles, warm themselves, and make tea. And I would bend the sky for them if I could. I pray for them day and night so that they stand up for our land,” says Olena Vladymyrets.
