A couple of Ukrainian reservists gets married next to a checkpoint
As Russian troops continue to press toward the capital, Lesya and Valeriy Filimonov have met for the first time since the war began to get married in Kyiv on March 6, 2022.
Before the war, Lesya and Valeiry were ordinary people without any plans to take weapons. The woman worked as a head of a scout organization. The man led an information technology company. Despite that, the couple decided to defend the city together, so they joined the Territorial Defense Forces of citizen volunteers in the Ukrainian military. “Here we have everything we love, and we have to defend it. We have no intention of giving it away to the enemy”, – Lesya Filimonova said.
This unusual wedding in the war conditions has shown that life and love continue despite the war. The bride wore the veil and fatigues. On her sleeve she had a yellow armband showing her belonging to the Territorial Defense Forces.
At some point in the Orthodox wedding ceremony, when the crown is traditionally held above the bride’s head, the military helmet was raised instead. At the end of the ceremony, the couple kissed, and the crowd called out in unison, “Glory to the family! Glory to the family! Glory to Ukraine! Glory to heroes! Glory to the nation! Death to the enemies! Ukraine above all!”.
