“A symbol of tragedy and genocide that we see every day” Ukrainian artist Maria Kulikovska’s performance on the stairs of the New National Gallery in Berlin

For a week, daily, from April 27 to May 4, 2022, Ukrainian artist and activist Maria Kulikovska has shown her performance “254” against Russia’s cruel war in Ukraine on the steps of the New National Gallery in Berlin.

The performance is a re-enactment of a protest which first took place in Russia’s St. Petersburg in 2014. Covered with the Ukrainian flag, Kulikovska lay on the steps to the museum as if wounded. The performance ended with the brief arrest of the artist. The title “254” refers to the number Kulikovska received after the annexation of Crimea by Russia in 2014 when she fled to Kyiv and became a registered refugee in her own country.

About the New National Gallery performance, Maria Kulikovska said: “This time this act is not a protest, but more an act of solidarity, an act of concern and collective pain, a symbol of tragedy and genocide that we see every day.”
