A year after the last Mariupol defender left the Azovstal steel plant

Today marks one year since the last Mariupol defender left Azovstal steel plant. On May 16-20, 2022, following the order of leadership, Ukrainian servicemen left the plant’s territory.

Mariupol were under the siege of Russian troops since March 1. Ukrainian defenders heroically held the besieged city for 86 days. After leaving the plant, more than 2,500 defenders from Azovstal were held in Russian captivity. Some of them have already returned home. But according to the association of “Azovstal” Defenders’ Families, more than 1,900 fighters remain in Russian captivity.
