Estonia transferred military aid to Ukraine worth almost 50% of its defense budget

Eastern European countries stand out as particularly generous when considering the size of their economy. Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland are the leading donors, the Kiel Institute for the World Economy reports.

In particular, Estonia has already transferred to Ukraine military assistance worth almost €400 million, or just over 1% of Estonia’s GDP. This amount is also almost half of Estonia’s defense budget, which reached €748 million in 2022.

Also, Russia’s attack on Ukraine has caused the largest European refugee crisis since World War II. Considering the population size of each welcoming country, Estonia tops the list (with a share of 4.96%).
