European Commission President arrived in Kyiv to negotiate the EU candidate status

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen arrived in Kyiv on June 11, 2022, to discuss Ukraine’s application to join the EU. Von der Leyen announced the visit, which had no public announcement before, on Twitter.

“It is good to be in Kyiv again. Together with President Zelenskyy, I will summarize the joint work needed for reconstruction and the progress made by Ukraine on its European path,” she said, adding: “Europe is with you.”

Next Friday, June 17, 2022, the European Commission is expected to publish its assessment of whether Ukraine should be granted the EU candidate status. EU leaders will consider the issue of granting the status at a summit on June 23-24, 2022.
