Historian Timothy Snyder meets Ukrainian soldier who read his book in trench

American historian and Yale University Professor Timothy Snyder has met with Oleksandr Shyrshyn, a Ukrainian soldier who was photographed reading Snyder’s book in a trench. Ukrainian serviceman called the meeting a “not an accidental chance.”
In January 2023, a picture of Oleksandr reading Snyder’s book “The Road to Unfreedom: Russia, Europe, America” in a trench got viral — 2.7 million people viewed it. Snyder posted a photo of a Ukrainian soldier with the caption: “the highest honor for an author is a reader.”
