Key points of G7 leaders at urgently-called meeting of the Group of Seven

In response to Russia’s massive missile attacks on Ukrainian territory on October 10, 2022, an emergency meeting of G7 leaders was held at the initiative of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz after his conversation with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The meeting came in the wake of Putin’s illegal annexation of four Ukrainian territories and a brutal assault on Ukrainian civilians and critical infrastructure in Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities.

G7 leaders reiterated the unity of opposition to Putin’s continued brutality in Ukraine. The leaders of the Group of 7 nations pledged “undeterred and steadfast” financial and military support for Ukraine and “severe consequences” for Russia if it were to use chemical, biological, or nuclear weapons.

Key points of the G7 joint statement:

  • Imposing further economic costs on Russia, including on individuals and entities — inside and outside of Russia;
  • The G7 reaffirmed that any use of chemical, biological or nuclear weapons by Russia would be met with severe consequences;
  • The call on the Belarusian authorities to stop enabling the Russian war of aggression by permitting Russian armed forces to use Belarusian territory and by providing support to the Russian military.
