Latvia urges EU to designate Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism

The EU should designate Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism, Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs said, after a Russian attack that killed dozens of Ukrainian prisoners of war in the occupied territories of Donetsk region.
“We see all the brutality of Russian forces, that actually resemble a lot of ISIS, who we have been always calling a terrorist organization,” Rinkēvičs told POLITICO in a phone interview. “Let’s call a spade a spade,” he said.
On Friday, July 29, 2022, Russians deliberately attacked a prison in Olenivka, Donetsk region, where Ukrainian prisoners of war were held, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported. More than 50 Ukrainian defenders were killed. According to Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Ukrainian diplomats brought the information about the Russian attack on Olenivka to the highest international level.
“The UN Security Council has been informed. All participants in international relations will know what exactly happened. Russia won’t be able to lie to anyone,” said Zelenskyy.
