Metropolitan Museum of Art recognized the artists Repin and Aivazovsky as Ukrainian

The Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York) changed the nationality of Illia Repin and Ivan Aivazovsky from Russian to Ukrainian in its descriptions.

Illia Repin was born in the Ukrainian town of Chuhuiv (Chuguev) when it was part of the Russian Empire. He went on to become a major progressive painter.

Ivan Aivazovsky (baptized Hovhannes Aivazian) was born into an Armenian family in the Crimean port city of Feodosia on the Black Sea. He became an internationally celebrated marine painter and claimed to have made thousands of seascapes.
