“Olenivka is a new Auschwitz”
On August 4, 2022, a performance “Olenivka is new Auschwitz” took place on Sofia Square in Kyiv. It was initiated by the relatives and friends of prisoners of war, who defended Mariupol and Azovstal. About 300 participants demanded that international organizations react and participate in the processes prescribed by international law.
They held posters condemning the UN and the International Committee of the Red Cross, accusing them of inactivity as guarantors of the safe return of the prisoners home. Those present chanted slogans: “Glory to the Azov regiment!” “Bring back our heroes!” “Russia is a terrorist country!” “Red Cross, hear us!” “Exchange!” and others.
On Friday, July 29, 2022, Russians deliberately attacked a prison in the occupied village of Olenivka, Donetsk region, where Ukrainian prisoners of war were held, including defenders from the “Azov” regiment. More than 50 Ukrainian soldiers were killed, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported.
