Russia has turned gas from a tool of blackmail into a tool of war

Poland, one of the key allies of Ukraine, will end all imports of Russian energy by the end of this year, said Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki. Currently, Poland gets 46% of its gas, 64% of its oil, and 15% of its coal from Russia.

“We’re calling for everyone in Europe to follow in our footsteps,” he said. “When we were consequently carrying out our plan to wean away from gas, from oil, our Western neighbors have made themselves dependent on Russia.”

“When others in Europe were looking at Russia as a trade partner, we knew that Russia was using gas and oil, especially gas, as a blackmail tool,” Morawiecki stressed. “Today this tool of blackmail has turned into a tool of war.”
