Russian invaders destroyed a mural with a girl who lost her mother during the shelling of Mariupol in 2015

Russian invaders in the temporarily occupied Mariupol painted over a mural in honor of Milana Abdurashytova, a little girl who lost her mother in 2015 when pro-Russian militants attacked a residential area of the city and killed more than 30 people.

As the Mariupol City Council reports, the “Milana” mural symbolized the tragedy of war and the hope for peace and restoration.

“In this way, the Russians are trying to erase the tragedy of 2015 from the memory of Mariupol residents, when pro-Russian militants fired on a peaceful quarter,” the report says.

In 2015, 3-year-old Milana survived the shelling thanks to her mother, who sacrificed her life to save her daughter — she covered Milana with her body. The little girl then lost her leg and had to learn to walk again.
