She is a medic, he was a military: a couple who fought together was separated by death
Yan Bailo, with the call sign “Handsome,” served in the military under a contract from January 2021. He met Maryna Dushkevych when she was a doctor in his military unit and taught tactical medicine.
Since spring 2021, the couple has been serving in positions in the east of Ukraine and was inseparable. Only death could separate them.
On June 6, 2022, Maryna was in a neighboring position when a fight broke out, which took the life of her loved one. As a result of the mortar shelling, Yan Bailo was wounded but continued to fight. Only an enemy mine that flew into the trench took his life as he received injuries incompatible with life.
Maryna continues to defend Ukraine from Russian invaders, “I am now without him, and I will continue to help our guys. But without him…” She adds: “He always helped and supported me in everything. We loved each other and were inseparable. Yanik always said that he had me in his head and heart.”
Yan Bailo was a brave warrior, respected by all his comrades. At the beginning of a full-scale war, on February 26, 2022, when enemy tanks attacked, he hit one of them and received the Award of Courage.
