The Economist names Ukraine country of the year for the heroism of its people and for standing up to a bully

“Our country of the year for 2022 can only be Ukraine,” the headline of The Economist’s article reads. For nine years in a row, the magazine chose the “country of the year.” According to the article, it is always a difficult choice for The Economist’s writers and editors but not this year.

“This year, for the first time since we started naming countries of the year in 2013, the choice is obvious. It can only be Ukraine,” the article reads.

The Economist praises Ukrainians for four of their qualities: heroism, ingenuity, resilience, and inspiration.
