“This is a slap to Ukraine” Ukrainian Ambassador Andrii Melnyk criticized Berlin’s decision to ban Ukrainian symbols at events on May 8-9, 2022

Ukrainian Ambassador to Germany Andrii Melnyk criticized the Berlin authorities for banning Ukrainian symbols at events on May 8-9, 2022.

“We are shocked that the Berlin police banned the carrying of Ukrainian flags on May 8 and 9, 2022. This is a slap to Ukraine and a slap to the Ukrainian people. This not only shows a lack of tact but is a catastrophic political decision,” Andrii Melnyk said.

Earlier, authorities in Berlin have banned Russian and Ukrainian flags from being flown near the city memorials this weekend as people commemorate the 77th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.

“The act of remembering as well as the respect for memorials and monuments must be preserved against the background of Russia’s current war of aggression in Ukraine,” the Berlin police said in a statement on May 6, 2022.
