“Ukraine’s problems are our problems too” South African politician John Steenhuisen pays a six-day visit to Ukraine
South African politician, and leader of the Democratic Alliance, John Steenhuisen, came to Ukraine to see the consequences of the brutal Russian invasion of Ukraine with his own eyes.
“It would be naïve to view this war as a regional threat. Make no mistake, the effects of this war are already reverberating across the globe and as usual, the poor will suffer most,” Steenhuisen said. “Morally, geopolitically, financially, it is inconceivable that South Africa would remain ‘neutral’ on the Ukraine invasion. Yet it is worse than that. Our so-called neutrality is in fact veiled support for Russia.”
During his visit, John Steenhuisen visited the western city of Lviv, which now is home to thousands of Ukrainian internally displaced persons. There he met both with local authorities and ordinary Ukrainian citizens. Also, he visited the Ukrainian capital and met with Kyiv Mayor Vitalii Klychko.
