Ukrainian defender executed by Russians for saying “Glory to Ukraine”, honored with Hero of Ukraine award posthumously

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy has posthumously awarded the highest national title — Hero of Ukraine — to Oleksandr Matsievskyi, a soldier executed by Russians on camera after saying “Glory to Ukraine.”
“I conferred the title of Hero of Ukraine upon Oleksandr Matsievskyi, a soldier. A man whom all Ukrainians will know. A man who will be remembered forever. For his bravery, confidence in Ukraine, and “Glory to Ukraine!” Zelenskyy said in the address.
Oleksandr Matsievskyi was a sniper in the 163rd Battalion of the 119th Separate Tank Brigade of the Chernihiv region. He was executed on Dec. 30, 2022. His body was returned home in February 2023, but a shocking video of his execution appeared in March.
