Ukrainian figure skaters earned ovations, qualifying for the World Cup finals
Alexandra Nazarova and Maxim Nikitin represented Ukraine in the 2022 Olympics in February and then returned to Kharkiv. After the war had started, Nazarova managed to leave the city, while Nikitin spent more than three weeks in Kharkiv under constant shelling by Russian troops. Finally, Nikitin also left Kharkiv and traveled more than 600 km by car and then by plane to participate in the World Cup.
The figure skating pair performed without proper training, wearing training costumes as they did not have the necessary ones. That was also the first time they performed to Jamala’s ‘1944’ song. The song is dedicated to the deportation of the Crimean Tatar people by the Soviet authorities during the Second World War. “This music reminds Ukraine not to give up. We ask all people not to give up and support each other,” commented Nazarova after the performance.
