Ukrainian flag flies over Zmiinyi Island
Ukraine’s blue-and-yellow flag was finally raised on Zmiinyi (Snake) Island on July 7, 2022, the military reported, days after Russian forces withdrew from the strategic and symbolic Black Sea outpost following months of occupation.
Several days ago Ukrainian flag arrived on Zmiinyi Island after the Russian withdrawal, but it was not raised yet. Zmiinyi Island became world-known when Russia first captured it in February 2022. A Ukrainian soldier serving on the island told an attacking Russian warship to “go f**k yourself,” a phrase that has since become one of the most popular Ukrainian slogans of resistance.
The Head of the Odesa Regional Military Administration, Maksym Marchenko, said that the following was written on one of the flags delivered to the island: “Remember, the Russian warship: Zmiinyi Island — is Ukraine!”
