Ukrainian paramedic Yuliia Paievska receives International Women of Courage Award from U.S. State Department

Ukrainian paramedic and volunteer Yuliia ‘Taira’ Paievska, who spent months in Russian captivity, is to be awarded the International Women of Courage (IWOC) Award from the U.S. State Department.

According to the statement, this award will honor a group of 11 extraordinary women from around the world who are working to build a brighter future for all.

“Yuliia ‘Taira’ Paievska has demonstrated extraordinary moral and physical courage in defending Ukraine against relentless Russian aggression,” the statement reads. Paievska was detained on Mar. 16, 2022, as she attempted to evacuate women and children from Mariupol to Zaporizhzhia. During three-month imprisonment, she has lost 20 pounds and has been enduring torture and beatings.
