The European Union’s Executive Commission, on June 17, 2022, has recommended that Ukraine and its neighbor, Moldova, be designated candidates for membership in the European Union.

“In the view of the Commission, Ukraine has clearly demonstrated the country’s aspiration and determination to live up to European standards,” said the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. “We have one clear message — and that is, yes, Ukraine deserves European perspective, yes, Ukraine should be welcomed as a candidate country. This is on the understanding that good work has been done — but important work remains to be done. The entire process is merit-based, so it goes by the book and progress depends entirely on Ukraine. So it is Ukraine that has it in its hands.”

The announcement by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, came a day after the block’s most powerful leaders visited Kyiv in a show of support, The Guardian emphasizes.
