Ukrainians mark the Day of Remembrance of the Defenders of Ukraine
On August 29, the Day of Remembrance of the Defenders of Ukraine who perished in the struggle for independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of the state is marked. The date to commemorate fallen defenders was not chosen by chance — it is connected with the Ilovaisk tragedy of 2014.
In August 2014, when Russia and Russian-backed militants had been conducting hostilities in Donbas, the Ukrainian defenders found themselves surrounded in the town of Ilovaisk, Donetsk region. Back then, the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, said that Russian-controlled militants would organize a humanitarian ‘green corridor’ for them. But the militants and the Russian military shelled the corridor through which the defenders of Ukraine exited. According to official data, 366 soldiers were killed near Ilovaisk, and 429 were wounded.
Today while Russia unleashed a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian defenders are on the frontlines, struggling for Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
“Our people will never forget everyone who fights for Ukraine, who gave life for it.
And our memory is not all we have. Our independence, which we will preserve and pass on to our children and grandchildren, our victory, which will surely come, will be the best tribute to the memory of all who died in this war,” said the President of Ukraine on August 29, 2022.
“Unfortunately, heroes die. They gain eternal life and eternal glory… Thank you for the greatest sacrifice consciously given to your state. This is how history is made and a nation is formed that will be admired by the world. I promise, no sacrifice will be in vain — we will continue the fight until our Victory,” said Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Valerii Zaluzhnyi.
