Ukrainians withdrew about $130 million of hryvnia cash from cards at checkout in stores in March 2022
Since the beginning of the war, the National Bank of Ukraine recommended that retailers provide Ukrainians with the opportunity to withdraw cash in retail chains and stores to satisfy the population’s need for cash and reduce the burden on collection services in the territories where the life and health of bank employees are at risk.
As of April 4, 2022, 25 Ukrainian banks, that issue payment cards, and over a thousand retail businesses around Ukraine have enabled hryvnia cash withdrawals from payment cards in stores. The number of POS terminals that offer this option is no less than 35,000.
The NBU estimated that cashiers paid out about UAH 3.8 billion or $130 million in cash back in March 2022. Daily around 88,000 transactions took place, each amounting to about UAH 1,400 or $48. Most frequently, Ukrainians withdrew cash when making payments in big food retailers, pharmacies, and gas stations.
