Warsaw abandons New Year celebrations due to war in Ukraine

Authorities of Poland’s capital have decided to abstain from holding any New Year’s celebrations in the city due to the on-going war in Ukraine, Ukrinform reports.

“A brutal, bloody war is raging in Ukraine, across our eastern border, in which peaceful people die every day. Therefore, now is not the climate that would inspire organizing such special, joyful events,” stated a spokeswoman for the Warsaw City Hall Monika Beuth.

Beuth also called on citizens to refrain from using firecrackers and fireworks on New Year’s Eve, because it may cause distress to Ukrainians.
