“We will have to exempt ourselves from Russian gas and regain our autonomy as quickly as possible” Thierry Breton, European Commissioner for Internal Market

Putin is using gas to split Europe as he continues to wage war on Ukraine, European Commissioner for the Internal Market Thierry Breton said in an interview with CNews and Europe1 on Sunday, June 5, 2022.
“We will have to exempt ourselves from Russian gas and regain our autonomy as quickly as possible because Vladimir Putin does not like the European project,” said Thierry Breton. “He uses gas to divide us, he has done everything for years to divide Europe.”
Breton said plans are in place if Putin takes further steps to switch off Russian gas after cutting supplies to Poland, Bulgaria, Netherlands, Finland, and Denmark. It includes boosting LNG imports, partly from the US and Qatar, accelerating solar and offshore wind power, and extending the life of nuclear and coal-fired plants.
